The Story Behind Our Sign
A local sign company, Dettmer Sign, made our original sign. It was largely painted with capital letters cut from a signboard in two pieces that read “O’NEILS” and “GLASS.”
The sign was screwed to a shingled awning-like façade on the front of the building. In the early 1980’s we had a big windstorm, and the “ONEILS” side of the sign fell and was hanging sideways.
Jack O’Neil called the owner of the sign company, who happened to be one of his friends, and told him we needed it rehung. When his friend, Mr. Dettmer, came out to put the sign back on the building, it was hung upside down as a practical joke.
He then waited to see how long it would take to get a call from an annoyed Jack O’Neil — which Jack ignored as he let it go to see who would blink first.
Our business saw a positive reaction from customers & passersby who enjoyed the humor of something so obviously wrong with our signage.
Finally, Jack called his friend and asked him to come out and do the job right — please turn the “GLASS” upside down to match “O’NEILS.”
All of our signs have been upside down ever since.
